SUMMARY:It's all Connected: Veganism as a Tool for Social Justice by Brenda Sanders
DESCRIPTION:Veganism is about far more than what’s on our plates – it’s deeply connected to human health\, equity\, and the future of our communities. In this talk\, we’ll explore how plant-based living can be a powerful tool for addressing some of today’s most urgent social issues\, including health disparities\, food system discrimination\, and environmental injustice. Through an accessible and thought-provoking discussion\, we’ll examine how the systems that harm animals are often the same systems that disproportionately impact marginalized communities\, and how compassionate\, sustainable choices can help create a healthier and more just world for all. \nBrenda Sanders is a vegan food justice activist who co-founded Thrive Baltimore\, a community resource center that offers free classes\, workshops\, cooking demos\, and other programming that support people in living a healthier\, more sustainable lifestyle. She’s also Executive Director of Afro-Vegan Society\, a nonprofit organization that provides resources to people in marginalized communities to assist them in transitioning to veganism.

SUMMARY:Bushmaster Blues
DESCRIPTION:Gary D Brown is a vegan\, musician\, and warrior for equality.  His band\, Bushmaster featuring Gary Brown\, a funky-cool-blues-rock-original music power trio based in the DC/MD/PA area have put out five self-produced albums containing some socially conscious lyrics.  Gary writes all the lyrics and most of the music\, and is in the process of creating new tunes – thus utilizing his downtime due to the pandemic\, to write\, while he waited till it was safe to perform live again.\n\n\nGrowing up in the Maryland suburbs of DC\, Gary absorbed/explored as much music as possible\, and picked up the guitar at the age of 12\, teaching himself\, and learning and playing with other players as much as possible.  He used to carry his guitar with him everywhere\, even to work\, and play on the breaks and while waiting for public transportation.  He formed Bushmaster in 1993 with a friend\, after stints in other local acts\, and has performed under the moniker ever since.\n\n\nAfter a gig in Greenbelt\, MD\, in 2008\, the band was invited to a neighborhood backyard event\, where he had an enlightening conversation over the bonfire with a local vegan advocate\, Cam McQueen.  She invited him and his wife Trudi to a vegan outreach event the following week\, where they showed the movie “Forks Over Knives”\, and opened up a panel discussion and question session with some of the doctors and producers of the show.  Gary & Trudi were so intrigued that they have been vegan ever since.\n\n\nAmong their many performances\, Bushmaster is thrilled to have participated at several vegan festivals including “Kale Fest” and Acorns a Go-Go” (put on by the aforementioned Cam McQueen in Greenbelt\, MD)\, and several years at “VegFest” in Lancaster\, PA\, the band’s favorite annual event.\n\n\nGary’s music tackles social topics from his own perspective and includes topics such as police profiling\, inner city violence\, environmental issues\, current political strife\, and veganism amongst other more traditional blues topics.\n\n\n… more information about Gary and his music can be found on his website:  BushmasterBlues.com
